Both marijuana and hemp plants are very absorbent. If it is grown in low quality soil or sprayed with pesticides, it will absorb more of the harmful chemicals, metals, and other contaminants into the plant itself. When the plant is cultivated to produce CBD oil, it will pass on some of those contaminants.
