The ‘Justified’ Star Took Half an Edible Before His Interview. The Host Found Out 12 Minutes In.

The Justified” star showed up to “Talk Easy” already rejecting the questions, fishing for compliments and threatening to walk out for the ratings. A few minutes in, he offered the missing ingredient: half an edible.

Timothy Olyphant did not ease into his episode of Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso. He came in swinging. He disputed a quote Fragoso read back to him (“Where’d you get that shit?”), rejected the host’s first real question outright (“No, I reject this question. I pass”), copped to fishing for a compliment (“Thank you. I was fishing”) and floated walking out David Mamet-style because, as he put it, “it’d be good for the show.” When Fragoso agreed the numbers would be spectacular, Olyphant didn’t argue. “The numbers would be great,” he said.

Then he supplied a piece of context nobody had asked for. Fragoso, feeling out a mushroom analogy, asked whether Olyphant was high. The answer arrived sideways.

“There might be, there might be edibles involved in this,” Olyphant said. “You know, pre-interview edibles.” How much? “A half. It’s, it’s like microdosing.” He’d cleared it with someone, apparently. “I said, ‘Hey, I’m going on, uh, Talk Easy with Sam.’ They said, ‘Half.’” Fragoso, per Higher Ground, learned about all of it the same way the audience does, live, with the mics already hot.

“What you’re experiencing here is, you know, like 20 years of experience and half an edible. And that’s why this thing is really singing.”

Timothy Olyphant

That’s the review, delivered by the guest. And it reframes the whole first act. The needling, the compliment-fishing, the walk-out threats: that was Olyphant having a good time, with half an edible somewhere in the equation.

None of it turns into a stoner bit. When the conversation settles, Olyphant is thoughtful and a little disbelieving about the career that got him here. On the long-shot gamble of moving to New York to study acting with no experience, then watching it pay off: “It’s, uh, ridiculous that it worked,” he said. A beat later, still turning it over: “I can’t believe it worked.”

He’s loose enough to be honest about the money, too. “One of my favorite things about acting is the money,” he said. “Is that they pay you to do it.” And about Justified, the role fans will not let him leave behind, he cops to a running airport ritual. “Someone basically comes up and reminds me, ‘You idiot, you should’ve never stopped. You should’ve just kept shooting people.’” Does he actually believe he never should have stopped? “No,” he said, “but it gives me perspective.”

Whether the edible deserves any of the credit is impossible to say, and Olyphant isn’t making the case either way. He’d already filed his own verdict: 20 years of experience and half an edible, and that’s why the thing was singing.

The full episode of Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso with Timothy Olyphant is out now via Higher Ground.
