Cannabis prohibition utilized the puritanical views of the white majority in the early 1900s to convince them to vote against cannabis. These puritanical views included the skewed message of Christian values guised under the mantle of “purity”. “No alcohol shall touch these lips” extended out to other substances as well such as opium and eventually marijuana. Let’s not forget the vile racial justifications conducted in the name of “God Almighty”. While today the version of Christianity preaches peace and inclusion – back then the Bible was a sword that helped justify atrocious acts. Remnants of these beliefs about “puritanical living” is one belief system that conflicts with smoking weed.
